Fortner shares memory of great-grandnephew from Civil War era

William T. Fortner joined the Confederates States of America in 1862 at age 16.

William T. Fortner was the great-grandnephew of Greer’s Don Fortner.

Don Fortner wrote: William T. Fortner joined the Confederates States of America in 1862 at age 16. He fought in many battles, was captured several times and eventually released in a prisoner swap. He later died at Winder Hospital in Richmond, Va. He is buried in the CSA area of Hollywood Cemetery near Richmond. He enlisted at Pickens, SC. and never returned home …
