Downtown roads closed during Family Fest, businesses, restaurants are open

Roads will be closed in downtown Greer Friday and Saturday during the 30th annual Greer Family Fest.
The closings will be Friday 6 a.m. to Sunday 2 a.m.
Foothills Philharmonic season ends Saturday

The Foothills Philharmonic ends its 13th season Saturday with its Pops concert at 7:30 p.m. at the J. Harley Bonds Career Center. The concert is free.
The Story Tellers, theme for the 2013-2014, season, featured international masterpieces. The season began by exploring classical masterworks and concludes by presenting popular favorites.
'Sleeping Beauty' characters entertain kids at tea party

Princess Morgan Grace Privette, 13, and King Eric Rhom, 17, were among the stars entertaining children attending the "Sleeping Beauty Kids" tea party at the Cannon Centre last Saturday.
Privette has been in children's theater for six months and Rhom is participating in his second play.
Dancers came to Greer knowing they could dance and showed it

Scores of young, high-stepping talented dancers came to Greer Friday night to show judges they knew they could dance. They also raised more than $5,000 for Relay for Life of Greer.
Council gives support to pursue grant that would replace Century Park facility

City Council approved its support for Parks and Recreation to pursue a matching grant that could result in a new multi-purpose facility at Century Park.
Council approved 7-0 its support Tuesday night for a letter of application. Steve Owens, Director of Communications at the City of Greer, said it gives Greer the opportunity to compete for a grant through the Land and Water Conversation Fund (LWCF). “The application process is a highly competitive process,” Owens said.
Princesses, Dragon Slayers invited to a party at Cannon Centre

Princesses will be treated like royalty and Dragon Slayers will be cheered for their bravery at a party on Sunday, April 27 at the Cannon Centre.
Dress like a princess and come as a Dragon Slayer and enjoy the accolades and activities at a tea party with light refreshments, face painting, crafts and pictures. Prizes and a drawing for a carriage ride are included in the package.
'Frozen', 'Despicable Me 2' headline Moonlight Movies season

“Frozen”, the Oscar winning best animated film and original song ("Let It Go") for 2014, highlights the Moonlight Movies schedule at Greer City Park Amphitheater. All movies begin at dusk and are free.
Seven of the eight cinema movies are animated and all are rated PG. “Teen Beach Party” is a made for TV movie.
Bass Pro Shops will develop the mixed-used development

Bass Pro Shops will anchor and be the owner-operator of a 75-acre mixed use development announced by David Britt, Spartanburg County Council Wednesday at the Chapman Cultural Centre in downtown Spartanburg.
The 120,000-square-foot Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World store will be the anchor tenant at the Hwy. 101 and 85 development that is scheduled to open in 2016. That means all subsequent developments including retail stores, hotels, restaurant, bowling alley and maybe a movie theatre will be cultivated by Bass Pro Shops.
Bass Pro Shops, regional mall may be coming to Greer

Spartanburg County economic leaders are expected to announce that Bass Pro Shops will build its long-delayed store in Greer at the intersection of Hwy. 101 and I-85 (exit 60).
A 4 p.m. press conference, with the public invited, is scheduled Wednesday in the lobby of the David Reid Theatre at the Chapman Cultural Center. A “significant economic development announcement” is scheduled to be heralded.

Doug and I chatted last week how I was looking forward to this year's Greer Family Fest because of its 30th anniversary that will be memorable with MTB on stage.
Music at its core reaches the soul of Skunk Festival fans

The 2014 Albino Skunk Music Festival will close out its three-day run Saturday to culminate a weather-perfect run. Cars, trucks, campers, ATVs, and makeshift theater viewing had music fans jamming throught the days an evenings.
From Underhill Rose, a 3-piece all female band, through early Saturday is was music non-stop.

25 celebrities announced for BMW Pro-Am, some wll be paired

Twenty-five celebrities will be in Greenville the week of May 12 for the BMW Charity Pro-Am, including 10 first-time participants. Officials also announced two new celebrity components, including featured celebrity groupings and six celebrities to play in Sunday’s final round.
The tournament is May 15-18 at Thornblade Club, The Reserve at Lake Keowee and, new this year, Green Valley Country Club.
Broome shares video message, is No. 2 at Reverbnation

Local talent J. Adam Broome shared a video message to fans while speaking with former Greer Idol winner Dana Jordan.
Broome is a singer and songwriter who has opened for bands like The Piedmont Boys and Benton Blount.
Ice sculpting team is 9th in the world

Edwin Hutchison is one of the coolest state champions around. Hutchison, by winning several competitions including the South Carolina Ice Sculpture championship, qualified for the world championships held in Fairbanks, Alaska where his team finished ninth.
The two person team competition consisted of Edwin, Ice Age Ice Sculptures of Greenville owner and Brian Conners from their Charleston location. They spent 16 days in sub zero temperatures in Fairbanks.

Greer First Baptist, New River team to tell Easter Story

A unique Easter celebration comes to Greer First Baptist Church featuring local renowned gospel bluegrass band New River Saturday at 6 p.m. and Sunday at 11 a.m.
Following the success of Greer First Baptist’s Smoky Mountain Christmas this past December, the Worship and Drama Ministries are partnering with New River to tell the Easter Story. Using the popular music and music style of New River along with dramatic “eye-witness” accounts of those who were there at the death and resurrection of Christ. The musical and dramatic production is for all ages.

“Breakfast for Dinner” is being served Thursday night at Ovation Brands restaurants. Gone are Chicken Alfredo and corn dogs to make way for the breakfast offerings at the Ryan's in Greer.

Leland Burch will have a book signing at Dobson Gifts and General Hardware Wednesday, 6-8 p.m.
The book , "Greer, S.C. - The Center of the Universe" is a compilation of some of Burch's columns written during his time as editor at the Greer Citizen during its heyday.
