ZFest visits downtown merchants, restaurants Saturday

The annual BMW ZFest will come through Greer Saturday as car owners and friends visit restaurants and shops. The event begins today and lasts through Labor Day.

Perry Williams encouraged the BMW sports car owners to visit Greer during the event three years ago. He was the leader in "follow the leader" to downtown and the occasion has grown since.

Even an inflatable Tiger is part of the Clemson tailgating landscape.

Being the host for ESPN's College GameDay on Saturday means there will undoubtedly be a lot of tailgating going on before the 8 p.m. Georgia at Clemson kickoff. GameDay will be aired 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Whether it is your game of the week or not, I find it interesting to read about other fun and sometimes weird traditions that teams practice when tailgating.

Wing Fling champion in semifinals on BBQ Pitmasters Sunday

Corree-Wood Schurman a cook for the team that won the Wing Fling at the weekend’s Sooie’t Relief BBQ competition will appear on TV tonight on the BBQ Pitmasters Grand Championship.

Schurman and teammate Lynnae Beth Oxley will appear on Destination America at 9 a.m. on the final episode of BBQ Pitmasters. The show has Pellet Envy and Butcher BBQ teams making up the semifinals.

U.S. Pastry Chef of the Year schedule to demonstrate craft

Ben Shelton, U.S. Pastry Chef of the Year, will demonstrate his craft Sept. 4 at Culinard in Greenville.

Culinard, the Culinary Institute of Virginia College in Greenville , will host U.S. Pastry Chef of the Year Ben Shelton for a pastry demonstration and lecture to be held Wednesday, Sept. 4, from 10 - 11:30 a.m. at its campus located at 78 Global Drive. The free event is open to current and prospective students of Culinard.

Shelton received first place honors and was named U.S. Pastry Chef of the Year at the 24th Annual U.S. Pastry Competition. Shelton’s winning creation,  “Origins,” which consisted of three components: a chocolate oriented showpiece and blown sugar; an entremet comprised of chocolate, passion fruit, banana and hazelnut layers; and praline bonbons.

Opening up a jar of my own creations helped me to remember and appreciate that straight from the garden flavor of my granny’s canned goodies.

Hearty seed grown tomato plants have endured this rainy summer weather. The humid weather that follows these southern afternoon rainstorms has helped some backyard farmers to produce an abundance of hearty and delicious gems.

A larger garden may require you to cook or can and maybe share with a neighbor or best friend. In my case, having parents with green thumbs makes for a happy daughter that gets to enjoy the overflow.

The Greer football team got a big taste of how much the business community loves its Yellow Jackets.

Jimmy Chulkas and the Clock Restaurant family and employees treated the 2013 edition of the Greer football team and its coaches to a free meal this afternoon. It’s become an annual event during the middle of Camp Swarm, a three-day team bonding and intensive summer camp.
