Shuler Bentley, former Byrnes High School standout, will transfer to Murray State to play football at the Football Championship Subdivision program in Murray, Ky.
Because he is transferring from Old Dominion University, a Football Bowl Subdivision to an FCS program, and he will be eligible immediately with two years left to play.
Junior Adams was named offensive coordinator after spending the past three seasons at Boise State University. Adams had a pair of 1,000-yard receivers this past season at Boise State.
Bentley will be coached by Steve Spurrier Jr., just announced as Murray State quarterbacks coach and assistant head coach.
“Happy and excited to continue my education and football career at Murray State University #GoRacers,” Bentley said on Twitter.
A two-time Gatorade high school Player of the Year in South Carolina, Bentley started seven games as a redshirt freshman for ODU in 2015. But he was replaced by David Washington at midseason. Bentley fell to third string this past season behind Washington and Blake LaRussa.
Bentley will enroll at Murray State this month and compete in spring practice.
Murray State, which plays in the Ohio Valley Conference, was 4-7 this past season. Quarterback K.D. Humphries graduates after setting school records in career passing yardage (10,463) and touchdown passes (72). Three other quarterbacks who played last season attempted a total of 37 passes.
Bentley is the son of South Carolina assistant coach Bobby Bentley and the brother of Jake Bentley, who started this season as a freshman for the Gamecocks.
