Blair Carrier wins state woodwinds competition, heads to Southern Division

Blair Carrier, an 8th grade student at Bob Jones Academy and resident of Greer, won the State Junior Woodwinds Competition of the South Carolina Music Teachers Association at Converse College on Nov. 4.

Blair Carrier, an 8th grade student at Bob Jones Academy and resident of Greer, will travel to the University of South Carolina in January to compete as a Division Finalist (ages 11-14) in the Southern Division of the Music Teacher National Association (MTNA) Junior Woodwind Competition.

Blair, the daughter of Randy and Julie Carrier of Greer, won the State Junior Woodwinds Competition of the South Carolina Music Teachers Association at Converse College on Nov. 4.

Blair has been studying flute for four years and is a student of Amanda Barrett of Lyman.

Her mother, Julie, is her accompanist for the competition and they will be performing Ernest Bloch’s Suite Modale for Flute and Piano, Concerto in G Major for Flute and Piano, Opus 29 by Carl Stamitz, and Sonata in F minor by Georg Philipp Telemann.

In April, Blair won the South Carolina Flute Society’s Junior Artist State Competition, also held at USC. She is the principal flutist for the Greenville County Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, and has been a Region and All-State Band member the past two years.

Competition finals are at the MTNA National Conference in Baltimore in March.
