Blue Ridge teacher/coach, Greer youth minister charged with shoplifting

A teacher and coach at Blue Ridge High School who serves as minister of youth at a Greer church was arrested on a shoplifting charge in Spartanburg Monday, according to the Spartanburg Police Department.

Travis Bruce Henson, 38, a social studies teacher, has been put on administrative leave, according to the Greenville County School District. Henson is a head baseball coach and assistant football coach at the school.

He is listed on the Washington Baptist Church website as minister of youth for the past three years.

According to the Spartanburg arrest report, Henson was booked into the Spartanburg County Detention Center on a charge of shoplifting less than $2,000.

The police report says Henson selected two baseball bats and a glove and concealed them in Walmart bags. He left the store without paying for them and then returned to the store and placed the items on the shelf in their original location. A Walmart representative confronted Henson.

Henson is on administrative leave pending an investigation of the charges, according to the school district.

Henson is a former coach at North Greenville University and Landrum High School. He accepted the head baseball coaching position at Byrnes in 2011 but stepped down five days later.
