Perhaps there was nothing more priceless for Bill Searcy than to give his son, Chandler, a strong hug outside the Bi-Lo Center after graduation ceremonies.

Bill Searcy wanted to make the timing of his son’s graduation gift memorable.

Graduation, Bill figured, was the perfect place and time to present Chandler Alexander Hughes Searcy, Greer Class of 2013, with his grandfather’s watch. Horace Searcy died seven years ago and the watch, a Timex, became a family heirloom.

“He didn’t know I was going to let him have it,” Bill said. “When I got it out of the drawer it was still ticking.”

Chandler was surprised when his father reached into his pocket and handed him the watch. “Are you kidding?” he said.
