A stop work order issued by the City of Greer on July 15 after a family cemetery was discovered during site preparation for the Orchard Crest subdivision was lifted Wednesday.
The developer has fully complied with the city’s demands and requirements for release of the stop work order have been met, allowing site preparation to resume at the property adjacent to Hwy. 101 North, according to the city. That includes the submission of new site development plans that include the cemetery, which was unmarked on previous plats.
But a law enforcement probe continues for possible violations of state code, which includes the destruction or desecration of cemeteries.
If violations are found, persons who own the cemetery may bring civil action, if necessary, to recover damages and the cost of restoration and repair.
Any new remains or markers discovered during site development are required to be reported and all activity is to cease until inspection takes place and appropriate measures, as necessary, are implemented.
