Sara Anne McGetrick, first head coach for the Converse College golf program, will see how her team fares Monday when the Valkyries host The Converse Invite at The Carolina Country Club.
Sara Anne McGetric, former Spartanburg High and Furman University golf standout, coaches her first season with the inaugural Converse College golf team. She played on the LPGA Tour 1986-1992.
Erin Penland, a freshman from Greer, is among the school’s first class playing the sport.
The invitational is the first multi-gender tournament, with the men competing in a separate division. Converse won its fall tournament, its first victory in the sport.
The tournament has a noon shotgun start. The public is invited.
“This is an exciting event for our program and Converse College that we, as a women’s college, are hosting a co-ed tournament,” McGetrick said.
McGetrick, played on the Spartanburg High School boys team, when the school didn’t offer girls golf, graduated Furman University (1985) and played on the LPGA Tour 1986-1992. Her top finish was second in the 1989 Hawaiian Ladies Open. She taught golf for 20 years in Colorado.
