Spartanburg District Five Schools announced several leadership changes in District administration, following approval from the Board of Trustees.

Todd Hardy has been selected as District Five’s new Chief Administrative Officer. Hardy has served as the Principal of Byrnes High School since 2016.

An official start date has not been announced. Hardy will remain as Principal at Byrnes to help guide the school through reopening in the fall. The District will begin the search for a new Byrnes Principal later this year.

Karen McMakin has been named Director of Federal and Gifted Programs. McMakin joins the District leadership team following seven years as Principal of Abner Creek Academy. Before that, McMakin served as Assistant Principal at Abner Creek, helping to open the school in 2008.

McMakin started her career in District Five, first as a teacher at Startex Elementary, and then taught 7th and 8th grade math and science at D.R. Hill Middle School. The district will begin the search immediately for a new principal at Abner Creek Academy.

Mitu Bagchi has been hired as Coordinator of Special Services. Bagchi comes to District Five from Spartanburg Six, where she worked as a literacy coach at Dawkins Middle School since 2016. Prior to that, she was a curriculum writer for the South Carolina Department of Education, collaborating with educators from across the state to develop middle school curriculum units.

Robin Bronson has been selected as Assistant Principal at Byrnes High School. Bronson has taught special education at Byrnes since 2012, achieving a 100% graduation rate for all seniors on her special needs caseload. Bronson has also served as the Head Varsity Cheerleading Coach for the Rebels for the last 8 years.
