Starting pitcher Dave Pomeranz was acquired by the Boston Red Sox from the San Diego Padres.
Anderson Espinsoa,18, pitcher for the Greenville Drive, was sent to the San Diego Padres in the Dave Pomeranz deal Thurdsay.
The deal was made Thursday, contingent on Pomeranz passing a physical, and confirmed after midnight.
Pomeranz, 27, was named to the National League All-Star team with an 8-7 record in 17 starts and the fourth-best earned run average in the major leagues at 2.47. He pitched one inning Tuesday night.
Pomeranz is 22-31 with a 3.66 ERA in 124 games (66 starts) in six seasons with the Rockies, A's and Padres.
The deal, straight up play for player, sent Espinosa, Boston’s fourth-ranked prospect (MLBPipeline.com) and No. 1 rated pitcher.
Espinosa, 18, (March 9) is the youngest player to start the season on the roster of a full season minor league team. He has consistently thrown in the mid-90s with the Drive this season. He had a 5-8 record, struck out 72, walking 27 in 76 innings pitched with a 4.38 earned run average.
The trade is the second for the Red Sox acquiring players the Drive this summer. Boston traded for Arizona Diamondbacks closer Brad Zeigler in a deal that sent Drive pitcher Jose Almonte and second baseman Luis Alejandro Basabe to the Diamondbacks. Basabe’s twin brother, Luis Alexander, plays outfield for the Drive.
Espinoza, from Caracas, Venezuela was slotted in as San Diego's No. 1 prospect, jumping baseball's overall No. 39 prospect, former Greenville Drive outfielder Manuel Margot, who was also acquired from Boston in a November 2015 trade that sent closer Craig Kimbrel to the Red Sox.
