First majorette, of first graduating class at Upstate school dies
Carolyn Caldwell is as much part of the Byrnes High School history as the athletes noted in Wikipedia.

James F. Byrnes welcomed its first class in 1955 with 21 teachers and reportedly 500 students.

Among them was Caldwell, from Lyman, a member of the first graduating class and, more importantly and memorable, the first drum majorette of the marching band.

Caldwell died Sunday. She was 80. Read obituary here.

Caldwell was especially proud of being a special member of the “Byrnes Girls”, a group of friends that began when they were first graders. They continue to meet monthly for lunch, shopping and fellowship.
