The Greater Greer Education Foundation awarded $13,000 in scholarships to 13 students from six high schools in the Greater Greer area Wednesday afternoon at Greer City Hall. Students were selected by the guidance department of each school and submitted to the Foundation. The Foundation in turn will present scholarship funds to the technical school or college on behalf of the student.
“This year’s 13 scholarships, along with the $21,900 in grants awarded to schools earlier this year, total $35,000 that we are giving back to the community this year — all for educational opportunities for our citizens,” Brent Garrett GGEF chairman, said.
“The Greater Greer Education Foundation would like to thank the people and businesses who have supported our efforts, and we proudly announce that the total amount of the Foundation’s gifts back to the community for education 2011-2016 total $150,000.” G
Garrett gave special thanks to Foundation sponsors: John I. Smith Charities, BMW, Greer Memorial Hospital, Pelham Medical Center, GSP Airport, D&D Motors, Greer State Bank Foundation and Greer Women Giving for Education.
David Dolge, chairman of the Foundation’s Grant and Scholarship Committee, thanked the school guidance counselors, parents and community for their support. “It’s because of you,” Dolge said, “that we are awarding these scholarships today.”
Wednesday’s scholarship recipients:
- The $1,000 Marlea Rhem Scholarship, in memory of Marlea Rhem, was awarded to Madeline "Maddy" Moreland, who will study Music Theatre at Converse College. She is a senior at Blue Ridge High School.
- A $1,000 scholarship was presented to Cameron Crowe, a senior at James F. Byrnes High School, who will study Nursing at Spartanburg Community College.
- A $1,000 scholarship was presented to Royal “Patrick” Hilley, a senior at Byrnes, who will study Auto Body at Greenville Technical College.
- A $1,000 scholarship was presented to Jeffrey “Phillip” Rainey, who will study Construction Science at Greenville Technical College. He is a student at the Bonds Career Center.
- A $1,000 scholarship was presented to Emely Gueva, a student at the Bonds Career Center, who will study Machine Tool at Greenville Technical College.
- A $1,000 scholarship was presented to Jenna Self, a student at Greer Middle College Charter High School, who will study Ultrasound Technology at Greenville Technical College.
- A $1,000 scholarship was presented Kyra Jones, a student at Greer Middle College Charter High School. She will study Computer Technology at Greenville Technical College.
- A $1,000 scholarship was awarded to Chase Taylor, a student at Riverside High School. He will study Mechatronics at Greenville Technical College.
- A $1,000 scholarship was awarded to William Richardson Taylor, a Riverside student, who will study Horticulture at Spartanburg Community College.
- A $1,000 scholarship was awarded to Evan Rice, a student at Blue Ridge High School, who will study Welding at Grenville Technical College.
- A $1,000 scholarship was awarded Nicolas Antonio (Tony) Lozano, a student at Blue Ridge High School. He will study Business Management at Greenville Technical College.
- A $1,000 scholarship was awarded to Lisa Nguyen, who will study Massage Therapy/Esometrics at Greenville Technical College. She is a student at Greer High School.
- \A $1,000 scholarship was awarded to Michael Stoxen, a student at Greer High School. He will study Auto Tech at Greenville Technical College.
