Gingrich gets 40 percent of Greer vote; Romney, Santorum trail

Newt Gingrich outdistanced Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum to win the Greer precincts tonight in the South Carolina Republican Presidential candidate primary.

Gingrich carried all 20 Greer precincts totaling 4,909 votes or 40 percent of the 12,158 votes cast. With only absentee ballots to be counted, Mitt Romney had 3,160 (25.9 percent) and Rick Santorum 2,151 (17.6 percent).

Gingrich also carried the state and gave the Republicans three winners – Santorum in Iowa and Romney in New Hampshire – in three states. The primary heads to Florida Sunday.

Only 77,095 or 27.7 percent of Greenville County's 278,183 registered voters cast their ballots today.
