Greer Athletic Hall of Fame adds 4 to Class of 2012

Cole Sims, Allen Mills, Chad Lister, Steve Kennette inducted Friday

Four members of the Greer High School athletic family are being installed into the Hall of Fame Friday night.  Steve Brown, of the Hall of Fame committee, submitted the stories.  The story, photos and complete list of the Hall of Fame will be in Friday night's "Yellow Jackets Sports Magazine" on sale at the stadium beginning at 6 p.m.

This year's members are:

Cole Sims
Class of 2005


Cole Sims was a five-year letterman in both swimming and tennis at Greer High School.

He earned all-Region in swimming in 2002, 2003 and 2004 and was a top eight finisher in the 50-yard freestyle in the 3A state championships in 2001 through 2004. He was voted Most Valuable swimmer as a senior.

Ranked No. 1 freshman in 3A state swim championships in the 50-yard freestyle. He won the bronze medal in the class 3A 50-yard freestyle at the 2003 state championships, setting a school record of 23.40 seconds.

Sims was all-Region in tennis 2003 and 2004 leading Greer to conference championships both years. His career record in single matches was 29-5 and he was 30-4 in doubles.  He lettered 2001-2005 and was 2002 team MVP.

Sims is a Clemson University graduate (Summa Cum Laude) with a B.A. in Biological Science and a fourth-year student at the Medical University of South Carolina with an emphasis in Internal Medicine.

Allen Mills
Class of 2003

Allen Mills was a three-sport letterman in football, basketball and track. He earned All-Conference in football and track.

During his football career at Greer High School he had 132 receptions with 13 touchdowns. Six of his scores were punt returns.

Mills scored the winning touchdown with less than a minute to play the last time Greer defeated Byrnes High School.

He was a member of the 2003 State Champion 4 x 100 relay team. He signed with North Greenville University after his high school career.

Chad Lister
Class of 1989
Honorary Member


Lister played both basketball and baseball at Greer High School and was Academic all-conference in both sports.

His basketball coaching career began at Greer High School as an assistant coach and later became the head coach at Strom Thurmond and Eastside high schools. 

At Strom Thurmond he won 39 games in three years, where his 1995-96 basketball teams advanced to the Upper State semifinals. He coached three NCAA Division I players at Eastside High School.

Lister became head basketball coach at North Greenville University in 2002, inheriting a program that had 11 losing seasons before his arrival. He has directed NGU to 50 wins in the past three years. Lister was named the NCAA Division II Coach of the Year in 2011-2012. His players have maintained a 3.0 grade point average during his tenure.

His overall coaching record at head coach in high school and college is 193-240.
Lister graduated from Furman University in 1995 and is doing graduate work through Boise State University.

Steve Kennette
Class of 1969
Honorary Member


Kennette lettered in all four years in football at Greer High School and started at offensive tackle his last three years. He was a two-year letterman on the golf team.

Kennette was a 1973 graduate of The Citadel and earned his Master’s in Education from the University of South Carolina.

He began his coaching career at Greer High School in 1973, spending his next 12 years as assistant coach in both track and football. He also coached girls basketball, soccer and golf.
Kennette coached at Byrnes for two years, Broome for four years and returning to Byrnes in 1991 where he coached offensive and defensive lines.

During Kennette’s 38 years as a football coach, his teams won 10 region championships and 8 state championships. He was an assistant coach n the 2004 North-South All-Star football game.
