Greer mom Bridgette McJunkins gave birth to Lyla Mae McJunkins as the first baby born in Greenville County in 2013.
Lyla arrived at 12:30 a.m. at Greenville Memorial Hospital. She weighed 7 pounds, 8 ounces and is 19.5 inches long.
Bridgette said a New Year's baby was furtherest from her mind. "My due date was the fourth and I thought I was going to be sent home," she said.
Lyla's birth changed an ordinary day into an extraordinary one for Bridgette. "The nurses were excited that (Lyla) was the first born. It's been a very busy day with the newspaper and television people here," she said. "I am a little tired."
It's the second child for the McJunkins, who moved to Greer to manage an apartment complex.
Holiday births are uncommon in the family, with a cousin born on Christmas Eve.
