Bryn Carrier, women’s junior class president at Bob Jones Academy and resident of Greer, performed the Ralph Vaughan Williams Oboe Concerto with the Clemson University Symphony Orchestra at the Brooks Center for the Performing Arts on Nov. 14 under the direction of Dr. Andrew Levin.

Bryn earned this honor after winning the 2017 Clemson University Young Artist Concerto Competition. After submitting an application and a recording for phase one of the competition, Bryn was among seven semifinalists chosen to perform in the final audition in September. The competition was open to high school students of the upstate of South Carolina and Clemson University students. She also won $200 as the competition winner.

Bryn has studied oboe with Mary AllyeB Purtle of Greenville since the age of nine. She has played in the Greenville County Youth Orchestras since 7th grade, and has been the principal oboist for the Philharmonic Orchestra and the Young Artist Orchestra for the past four years.

Bryn auditioned in March at the Fine Arts Center and was selected to be the soloist for the 2018 GCYO Spring Concert. She will perform three movements of the Darin Lewis’ Oboe Concerto with the YAO orchestra at the Peace Center Gunter Theatre on May 12, 2018.

Bryn has played in the Bob Jones Academy bands since elementary school, and she has also played in the Bob Jones Academy Symphony Orchestra since ninth grade.

The past four years she has achieved All-State Band, and last summer she studied oboe at the John Mack Oboe Camp in North Carolina. In addition to her oboe studies, Bryn studies piano with her mom and enjoys reading, playing softball, and ministering with her family in the music ministry at Morningside Baptist Church.
