Greer names 3 finalists for city administrator

The three finalists for Greer City Administrator have been announced.

Shawn Bell, Fountain Inn City Administrator, Andrew Merriman, Deputy County Administrator for York County, and Mike Sell, Assistant/Deputy Administrator for the City of Greer were selected from among 59 candidates.

“Selecting the City Administrator has been a work in progress and we are excited about the finalists,” said Greer Mayor Rick Danner. “City Council understands the importance of both the position and the process. We are fortunate to have several strong candidates.”

City Council will interview each candidate for the job to succeed Ed Driggers, who announced in November he is retiring on July 26. Driggers has served Greer for more than 20 years.

The candidates are:

• Shawn Bell attended the University of Missouri, earning a bachelor’s degree in political science with a minor in business. He received a master’s degree in public administration from Southern Illinois University. He was assistant to the city manager for the City of Abbeville, from 2013-2014; city administrator for the City of Lake City, from 2014-2017; and city administrator of the City of Fountain Inn, from 2017 to present.

• Andrew Merriman earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and psychology at Tusculum College in Greenville, Tenn. He earned his master’s in city and regional planning from Clemson University. He served as the city manager for the City of Bluefield, from 2009-2012; deputy county administrator in Aiken County, from 2012-2016; and deputy county manager of York County, from 2016 to present.

• Mike Sell earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of South Carolina and a master’s of public administration from Clemson University and the University of South Carolina. He served as the sales supervisor at Sears Roebuck and Co., from 1987 to 1997; a local government analyst for South Carolina Appalachian Council of Governments, from 1997 to 2007; and assistant/deputy city administrator for the City of Greer, from 2007 to present.
