The Greer Nationals wait out a long delay as the Dixie Youth Championships earlier games pushed back the schedule Saturday.
The (11-12) age group Greer “O” Zone conference baseball team is hosting the Dixie Youth District Championships at Greer Country Club ball field.
The Greer Baseball Club Nationals beat Mauldin, 15-3, in the opening round Saturday. Greer will play Liberty in a winner’s bracket game Sunday at 2 p.m. Mauldin falls to the loser’s bracket and will play an opponent to be named Monday at 6 p.m.
The championship game is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday.
The championship last year was hosted in Liberty and it rotates each years.
The tournament includes 11 teams from around the Upstate.
“This was a group that went through tryouts and was selected for our team,” Greer Head Coach Tommy Stanton said. “They have a great opportunity to represent our town, our community and they’ve worked really hard to prepare for districts.”
Stanton said, “I think (the tournament) is going to be extremely competitive. These are the best from every community that they represent, Mauldin is going to give us their best especially on the first day you always see good pitching so just got to be prepared for that and battle for six innings.”
“We’d love to see these kids compete and go to state to represent our town,” Mauldin Head Coach David Yearwood said. “The kids are hitting the ball real well so the hitting is going to be really good for them.”
