Hendley lost to Bryan Norton, Mission Hills, Kan., Tuesday, 3 and 2. Hendley finished 23rd in stroke play with 73-73-146 and was nine strokes off the pace of medalist Alan Fadel who had a 69-67–136.
Cloninger, of Fort Mill, who played football and baseball at Wofford College, reached the quarterfinals by beating qualifying medalist Alan Fadel, (Toledo, Ohio) 7 and 6, and then had birdies on the 18th and 19th holes to eliminate David Szewczul (Farmington, Conn.).
Cloninger will play Frank Dial of Auburn, Ala., Thursday morning. Cloninger finished stroke play at 73-74–147. The semifinals are schedule in the afternoon and championship is Thursday.
The tournament is open to golfers 55 and over.
