Carmel, Ind. Mayor James Brainard will speak at the Tuesday, March 4 "Investing in an Active Downtown" presentation and panel discussion.

Upstate Forever, in partnership with the City of Greer, is hosting “Investing in an Active Downtown” on Tuesday, March 4, an after-work presentation and panel discussion featuring mayors James Brainard of Carmel, Ind., Rick Danner of Greer, Elaine Harris of Pacolet, and Chris Story, Assistant City Manager of Spartanburg.

Carmel’s population has grown from 25,000 to almost 80,000 in the past 12 years. The city was voted the No. 1 Best Place to Live in America by Money Magazine in 2012.

“While we are happy that there has been growth in general, we are especially proud of the type of managed growth we have achieved, which has led to our large cash reserves, reasonable debt levels and low taxes,” said Brainard.

Carmel made investments in parkland, trails, green space, high quality public spaces, and bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure. The city’s focus on growing new businesses has resulted in residential property taxes among the lowest in Indiana.

Registration and a reception are at 5:30 p.m. followed by a presentation by Brainard at 6 in Hall A at Greer City Hall. A panel discussion will follow
