Johnson, long-time postmaster of Wellford Post Office, dies

Alfred O. "Red" Johnson served as Postmaster of Wellford Post Office for 26 years.

 

Alfred O. “Red” Johnson served as Postmaster of Wellford Post Office for 26 years. He was active in the National Association of Postmasters, and served as president of the South Carolina Chapter for one year.

“Red”, as he became known since his birth in 1920, died Wednesday in Lyman. He was married 75 years to his beloved wife, Elsie.

As an avid Byrnes High School fan, “Red” was an original member of the school’s Football Booster Club. He also assisted in organizing the PTA at Byrnes.

“Red” enjoyed his lifetime association with Wellford Baptist Church serving as Director Sunday School and Church Training, as a deacon and a member of the church choir.

He served in the Army Air Force in World War II.

“Red’s” passion for golf carried over to him playing until he was 97.
