Carson McAbee, a senior at St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Greenville, has been named a 2018 National Merit Finalist.

McAbee, from Greer, is among students who scored in the top one percent of scores from the 1.6 million U.S. high school students who took the PSAT and NMSQT.

To advance to the final round of competition, each semifinalist and his high school had to submit a detailed application that provided information about the student’s academic record, participation in school and community activities, leadership abilities, honors and awards. Each semifinalist had to be endorsed and recommended by an official from his high school, write an essay and earn SAT scores that confirmed the student’s earlier score on the qualifying test.

McAbee scored 1550 out of a possible 1600 on the SAT and a 35 out of a possible 36 of the ACT.

McAbee is a 2017 USA Powerlifting National Champion and plays varsity baseball at St. Joseph’s.

He is the son of Joey and Renee McAbee of Greer and grandson of Joe Kenneth McAbee of Blue Ridge and Jeanene Cain of Cope.
