BEREA – Unhampered by rain and swampy field conditions for the first time in weeks, Greer finally looked every bit the No. 3 team in the Class 3A state rankings.
Maybe better.
The Yellow Jackets got five touchdowns from four different receivers – all the first half – from starting quarterback Mario Cusano and cruised to a 61-0 humbling of host Berea Friday night.
Greer had turned in lopsided scores en route to its 7-0 (4-0 Region II-3A) start, but dominated Berea from the outset.
“It’s the first dry night in a couple of weeks, and we were finally able to go out and do everything we’re capable of doing,” Greer Head Coach Will Young said. “It’s been kind of difficult to throw the football the past couple of weeks, so that’s limited us offensively.”
In near-perfect conditions, Cusano threw for 287 yards on 16 of 22 passing, including touchdowns of 54, 15, 50, 5 and 36 yards. All of Cusano’s touchdown tosses came in the first half.
Receivers Dorian Lindsey and Ramone Ramage had two touchdown receptions apiece, with the second of Ramage’s coming from 37 yards out from backup Brice Green in the third quarter. Lindsey, who was named to the Shrine Bowl along with teammate Troy Pride earlier in the week, led all receivers with six catches for 109 and the two scores.
Cusano hit Pride in stride on a 54-yard strike to cap the game’s opening drive and begin the scoring deluge as the Yellow Jackets erupted for 42 first-half points.
“I’ve been waiting for this Friday,” Cusano said. “The past couple of Fridays have been really wet and not really a quarterback’s element. I really wanted to come out here and prove who I am.”
While Greer’s offense rolled up 432 yards from scrimmage, averaging nearly 10 yards per snap, the Yellow Jackets’ defense was just as dominant. The Greer defense intercepted Berea quarterback Colby Pressley four times and held the Bulldogs’ go-to ground game to just 34 yards on 40 carries.
Adrian McGee, who took a screen pass from Cusano 50 yards for a score, also picked off Pressley and returned the interception 35 yards for a score. The Yellow Jackets also tackled Pressley for a safety after a punt snap sailed over his head and into the end zone.
It was the fourth straight loss for the Bulldogs (2-5, 0-4), who have been outscored 95-0 over the past two games. Chapman shut out Berea 34-0 on Oct. 2.
“We were clicking on all cylinders,” Cusano said. “After watching film, I knew the hot routes would be there, and they really didn’t have that strong of a secondary. We wanted to expose them quick, and we did.”
Greer travels to Chapman next Friday night.
