Seventh-ranked Greer beat cross-town rival Riverside Friday night in a non-region game, 35-7, at Riverside High School.

Greer is 2-0 and travels to Union County in the Jacket Bowl next week. Riverside (1-1) will host Woodmont at the Reservation.

Greer scored three touchdowns in the second quarter to take the wind out of Riverside’s sails. Scoring runs by Adrian McGee of 4- and 14-yards and freshman Quay Thackston on a 13-yard run helped the Yellow Jackets get 22 points in the second quarter.

Mario Cusano lofted an across the field, 34-yard pass to a wide open Zaccharia Glidden for Greer’s first points in the first quarter.

Riverside’s points were on a 5-yard jump pass from Ryan Cerino over the middle to Corey Bridges with 3:47 remaining in the second quarter. Antoine Kahaleh’s kick was all the Warriors were to get.

Greer Head Coach Will Young gave early season praise for the play of his linemen. “We were physical on both sides of the ball,” Young said. “Physically we are playing well.”

Bobby Farrington, senior linebacker, started and made an impact. He recovered a fumble, pressured Cerino throughout the game and played well against the run. “He’s a workhorse and I’m glad to see him have a good game,” Young said.

Farrington is coming back from a broken collarbone last season and started for the injured Cedric Sullivan. “I thought I played well outside of a few penalties,” Farrington said.

Riverside Head Coach Phil Smith, who played and coached at Greer, said the depth, side and speed of the Yellow Jackets was too much to overcome. “We don’t have the depth to match up with Greer and we had some key guys out with injuries,” Smith said.

The Warriors ran a fast-paced offense on its first and third series. “Offensively they did a tremendous job,” Smith said. “If we could have found a way to get points on the board on that first series it would have changed the game early.”

Riverside had Greer on its heels on a 50-yard opening drive that stalled at the 26. Penalties forced the Warriors to punt, downing the ball at the 3-yard line.“They wore our front down tonight. Despite on how your move the football you try not to go three and out,” Smith said.
