Edgar Massengale, resident of Oakleaf Assisted Living on Thornblade Ave., died March 2, 2016 at Greenville Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.

Born February 19, 1919, son of the late Oscar William and Jamie Barnett Massengale, he was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII having served in the 4TH Infantry, fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was a Purple Heart recipient.

Mr. Massengale retired from Hoechst Celanese in 1984.

He and his late wife were founding members of Southside Baptist Church where they faithfully attended until they were unable.

At the age of 93, he was the first patient in the Upstate to receive transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR).

Surviving:

Surviving are two sons, Jimmy Massengale (Sondra) of Birmingham, Alabama and Ray Massengale (Sherry) of Columbia; six grandchildren, Mike Massengale (Stacey) of Simpsonville, Dana McKinney (Paul) of Starkville, Mississippi, Kelley Massengale Ozier (Kurt) of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Stephen Massengale (Leah) of Birmingham, Alabama, Leslie Habachy (Joe) of Atlanta, Georgia and Ray Massengale, Jr. (Erin) of Rock Hill, South Carolina; two step-grandsons, Robert Brinson and Brian Brinson (Frances) all of Columbia; thirteen great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Myrtle Massengale and Shirley Poteat; and brother-in-law, Jack Bentley.

Mr. Massengale was predeceased by his wife of 72 years, Ella Mae Bentley Massengale and siblings, Marie Cooper, Ola Leonard, Andrew Massengale, Horace Massengale, George Massengale, Edwin Massengale (his twin brother), Mary Lou Waters and Leroy Massengale.

Funeral Services:

Funeral services will be held 2:30 p.m. Saturday at The Wood Mortuary.

Burial will follow in Hillcrest Memory Gardens.

Pallbearers will be grandsons Mike Massengale, Stephen Massengale, Paul McKinney, Ray Massengale, Jr., Kurt Ozier, Robert Brinson, and Brian Brinson.

Visitation will be held 1:00-2:15 p.m. Saturday at The Wood Mortuary.

The family is at 102 Cunningham Drive, Greer, SC 29651.
