Martha Grace (Thomas) Pettit, 89, passed away in her Statesville home Saturday, November 3, 2012. She was born December 13, 1922 in Rossville Township, SC and was the daughter of the late Charlie F. Thomas and Minnie Lester Thomas.
She attended Duncan High School and Winthrop College and on May 29, 1942 she married Alvin E. Pettit (Jack), who preceded her in death in 1993. Martha and Alvin moved to Statesville in 1961 and was a member of First Baptist Church.
Her love of children extended to more than her five children.
Martha was a 50+ year member of First Baptist Church of Statesville where she served as a Sunday School Nursery worker for more than 45 years. She worked for more than 13 years as secretary and dietician for Barium Springs Children?s Home between the years 1966 ? 1979. Later she became a teacher?s assistant at Presley Elementary School.
After her retirement and the death of her husband, she spent many years singing in the church Senior Choir and the Mitchell College Community Choir. She also loved the Atlanta Braves, Clemson Tigers, ball room dancing and gardening.
Surviving:
Martha is survived by her five children, Genie Garner (Walter), of Ozark, AL, Mike Pettit (Anne), of Greensboro, NC, Al Pettit (Rebecca), of Statesville, Jeff Pettit, of Statesville and Renee Porter (Mike), of Thomasville, GA. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, Shane Garner, Shawn Garner Paay, Stefanie Pettit, Josh Pettit, Drew White, Jeff Swicegood, Tara Pettit, Ryan Pettit, Conan Pettit, Briana Pettit, Chance Porter and Hailey Porter. She is further survived by eight great grandchildren, Kathryn, Lily and Addelyn Paay, Xavier Garner, Nayana and Makayla White, Jacob and Haley Pettit and two sisters, Harritte Thompson and Charlene Shealy, both of Greer, SC.
Funeral Services:
The visitation for Martha will be held on Tuesday, November 6, 2012 at the Nicholson funeral Home from 7:00 until 9:00 PM.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 PM Wednesday, November 7, 2012 at First Baptist Church with Dr. Jeff Porter and Dr. Causey officiating. Burial will follow in the Oakwood Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Ryan Pettit, Conan Pettit, Josh Pettit, Drew White, Shane Garner, and Chance Garner.
