R.E. Gwinn, Jr., 75, died December 21, 2012 at Spartanburg Regional Hospital. He was the son of the late Rufus E. Gwinn, Sr. and Hattie Jones Gwinn.

He was a faithful member of Friendship Baptist Church, where he served as deacon, church treasurer (30+ years), and in other church organizations.

He was a member of Greer Golf & Country Club and loved the game, especially spending time with his golfing buddies, Joe Smith, Leon Campbell, Hulon Brown and Vernon Payne.

He was a member of the Irving Southworth Lodge No. 350, and served in the South Carolina National Guard for nine years.

He was employed in the trucking industry first with Branch Motor Express and retired in 1995 from Yellow Freight.

Surviving:

Survivors include his beloved wife of 56 years, Peggy Newman Gwinn; a beloved daughter, Melodie Gwinn Stowell (Shawn); a grandson, Shane Stowell; two granddaughters, Fallon and Logan Stowell; a brother, Billy Gwinn (Hazel); a sister, Betty Ruth Smith (Hugh); beloved sisters-in-law, Jane Orr (Floyd), Onivia Gwinn and Kathleen Gwinn, and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Boyce E. Gwinn and J.B. Gwinn.

Funeral Services:

Funeral services will be held at Friendship Baptist Church, 1600 Holly Springs Road, Lyman, SC 29365, on Sunday, December 23, 2012 at 3:00 p.m., conducted by Rev. Steve Durham.

Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 1:30 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. Sunday at the church prior to the service.

Active pallbearers will be nephews, Donnie Barnette, Ben Barnette, Marc Gwinn, Rodney Tapp, Everett Smith and Austin Smith.

Honorary pallbearers will be his golfing buddies, John Price?s and Dean Bryant?s Sunday School Class, Harold King, Don Black, and Rev. Michael Gwinn.

Memorials may be made to Friendship Baptist Church Building Fund, 1600 Holly Springs Rd., Lyman, SC 29365.

The family is at the home, 499 Hampton Road, Lyman, SC 29365.
