The Greer football players made a clean sweep of surrounding roads Tuesday afternoon and also made a dent in Head Football Coach Will Young's truck.

The tradition at the end of the cleanup sweep is for the athletes to unload the bags of trash in front of the Greer High School sign for a group photo. Young thought it was best to keep the bags in his truck so he could unload the players' haul. He parked the truck in front of the sign and encouraged the players to pile on while he shot video.

The photo op was an excellent choice. Young just forgot how big some of his players were. Players getting off the truck's cab realized the extra pressure was too much and several dents developed that could be seen from the inside.

Players frantically tried to smooth some of the dents upward to no avail. They sheepishly disassociated themselves from the roof and inside the cab.

Young wasn't bothered, laughing at his players trying to make a quick fix.

"I thought about selling this truck but my taxes are only $18 a year. Why would I want to do that," Young said. The truck, almost vintage in Young's view, was purchased in 1983.  It averages seven miles per gallon of gas.

The players cleaned E. Gap Creek Road from the high school school to Country Club Road where it connects with Hwy. 14.

Young videoed the players as they were collecting tires, beer and alcohol containers, pieces of vehicles and various paper and cardboard trash.

A player told Young he saw a dead possum. "Did you pick it up?" Young asked. That was met with a profound "No."

Greer's football players also had a highway cleanup last summer along the same roads. Principal Marion Waters cooked hamburgers for the players since school was out.

Tuesday the players were steered back to the gymnasium and weight room for daily conditioning drills.

Young drove home with a little less head room in his truck.
