Powerful Greer matched with at-large TR in playoff opener

Greer will face a familiar foe when the Class 3A playoffs begin Friday at 7:30 for the Yellow Jackets at Dooley Field.

Region II-3A foe Travelers Rest received an at-large bid into the playoff field and will be Greer's opening-round opponent. Tickets to playoffs are $7 and will be available at the gate Friday.

"We're just happy to be playing," Greer Head Coach Will Young said. "Really, it doesn't matter to us who we're playing."

The unbeaten Yellow Jackets (10-0) defeated the Devil Dogs (6-4) 41-13 on a rain-soaked field in Travelers Rest on Sept. 25.

In that game, Troy Pride, who was filling in for an injured Adrian McGee at running back for most of the game, ran 13 times for 190 yards and three touchdowns. The Yellow Jackets rolled up 336 yards on the ground.

Meanwhile, Greer's defense held Travelers rest to 134 yards of total offense with most of that coming from standout running back Zay Terry, who ran for 92 yards on 34 carries and scored both Travelers rest touchdowns.

Greer spent this past week preparing for the possibility of facing Travelers Rest. Pickens was also a candidate to receive the at-large bid, but Travelers Rest became the fifth team from Region II-3A to make the playoff field.

Greer, which owns a 13-game winning streak dating back to 1985 against the Devil Dogs, also used its week off to heal some injuries. Receiver Zach Glidden, who suffered a knee injury against Travelers Rest that caused him to miss the rest of the regular season, could return for the opening round of the playoffs.

If Greer gets past Travelers Rest, another familiar foe will be waiting – the winner of the first-round game between Union County and Belton-Honea Path.

Greer and Union County annually play in the “Jacket Bowl: rivalry game, which Greer won 35-28 on Sept. 11. BHP traveled to Greer in the opening round of the playoffs last year and trounced the Yellow Jackets 55-21.
