Greer City Police narrative

Rapper DMX was arrested again in the greater Greer area just before midnight Tuesday, the Greer Police Department reported.

Earl Simmons, 42, also known as DMX, a passenger in a truck that was stopped for traffic violations, was charged with simple possession of marijuana.

Upon recognizing Simmons in the truck, officers realized he had an outstanding warrant for driving under suspension and he was placed under arrest.

It’s the third time Simmons has been arrested in the upstate. In July he was charged with DUI and driving without a license, first offense. Last February Simmons was arrested in Spartanburg County and charged with driving without a license.

Arrest of the well-known rapper, who lives in Lyman, typically draws interest from entertainment and national news media. “I knew it would be busy day when I saw he had been arrested,” Lt. Jim Holcombe of the Greer Police Department said. “I’ve been in class all day and trying to get to as many calls as possible during the breaks. Two Hollywood, CNN and AP are some of the calls coming in.”

Police report Simmons was a passenger in the 2006 Ford F350 when the vehicle was stopped at 11:53 p.m., on Wade Hampton Boulevard near Applebee’s, for an improper turn that crossed two lanes of traffic without signaling followed by a U-turn.

The driver, Anitra Rhodes, 39, of Greenville was acting suspicious, police said, as they spoke with her while she was searching for information. A bag of marijuana was noticed on the passenger door armrest, next to where Simmons was seated. He denied it was his when asked by police, according to the report.

EMS was called to check Simmons after he made comments about having breathing difficulties. Paramedics cleared him of having problems, the report said.

Three more bags of marijuana were found under the driver’s floorboard, the report said.

Rhodes was charged with simple possession of marijuana.
