Riverside debate students place first at first tournament of season

Riverside speech and debate students placed first at their first tournament of the season Oct. 4 at the Twelfth North Mecklenburg Jimmy K. Poole Viking Classic.

The team won first place in Sweepstakes, which is first place out of the 38 schools who participated.

First place individual winners: Stephanie Hong in Dramatic Interpretation; Maggi Whiston in Radio; Shelby Peek in Original Oratory

Second place individual winners: Kyrah Brown in Storytelling; Jordan Childs in Novice Extemporaneous; Sooruj Bhatia in Novice Reading; Shelby Peek in Expository; Allison Watts in Novice Dramatic Interpretation

Third place individual winners: Stephanie Hong and Carol Lee in Duo Interpretation; Elizabeth Hall in Novice Reading; Unshu Biyani in Impromptu; Leo Branciforte in Novice Humorous Interpretation

Fourth place individual winners: Carol Lee in Humorous Interpretation; Faith Ingle in Storytelling; Ashley Marler in Lincoln; Douglas Kelly Wang in Novice Congress Chamber 2

Fifth place individual winners: Matt Harrington in Original Oratory; Devin Remley and Monique Louw in Duo Interpretation; Addison Cox in Novice Reading

Sixth place individual winners: Unshu Biyani in Extemporaneous; Matt Harrington in Humorous Interpretation; Cailey Campbell in Novice Reading; Sarai Dai in Varsity Congress Chamber 2

The Riverside team hosted the Carolina Kickoff Tournament Sept. 27, the first tournament of the season for South Carolina teams.

Riverside students did not compete but served. Teams from South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia and Ohio attended.
