The Riverside Warriors played with a heavy heart in its final regular season game Friday night.

Dorman beat Riverside, 35-7, on Senior Night at the Reservation and dropped the Warriors to the No. 4 seed in Region II-4A. Riverside plays on the road at an opponent to be decided in the first round of the playoffs next Friday.

Riverside’s players and students were mourning a member of its family who died earlier in the week.

The Warriors had an impressive opening drive that ended at Dorman’s five-yard line when Emanuel Jackson’s pass was underthrown.

Dorman quarterback Tom Hill threw four touchdown passes – two each to Stanford commitment J.J. Arceqa-Whiteside and Tyrek Long. Arceqa-Whiteside’s 72-yard run after catch TD ended the Cavaliers’ scoring with 7:31 left in the third quarter and a 35-0 lead. Arceqa-Whiteside also scored on a 20-yard run to open the game’s scoring.

Riverside prevented the shutout when Jackson scored on an 18-yard run with 1:19 left in the game.

“I hate for the seniors to go out like that and not play up to their potential,” Phil Smith, Riverside head coach, said.

Riverside finished 4-3 in the region and 5-6 overall. Dorman is 5-2 in the region and 9-2 overall.

Riverside could only muster 57 yards of total offense while Dorman rolled up 479 yards.

“The defense played well on the first drive and made them go for it on fourth down,” Smith said. “Dorman is just a very good football team.”

Riverside's Tanner Pittman injured his knee early in the game and did not return in the second half. The senior defensive back will have his knee examined next week.

Smith talked to the disheartened team after the game.

“These guys have never been in this kind of situation,” Smith said. “We still have another football game to play. Usually they are hanging up their gear after a season.

Seniors paused for a moment of silence at halftime and sent about two dozen red and blue balloons in the air at midfield.

“I told the team to get to a spot where they are comfortable and come out Monday and let’s get ready for the playoffs," Smith said.

“We’re going to enjoy next week.”
