Russia will assemble the Greer-manufactured X4s, BMW confirmed.

BMW Manufacturing will ship parts from the Greer production facility to Russia where the kits will be completed at Russia’s Kaliningrad plant.

The X4, a compact crossover, will join seven other BMW models being produced in Russia in collaboration with its local partner Avtotor, according to reports.

Other BMW models built from semi-knockdown kits include Greer-manufactured X3, X5 and X6 SUVs . The 3-, 5-, and 7-Series BMWs and the X1 are also assembled in Russia by Avtotor.

BMW wants to produce X4s in Russia to avoid the recycling fee applied to imported vehicles.

With new car sales declining 38 percent in Russia this year, BMW bas postponed a decision on building its own plant in there because of its uncertainty caused by the economic crisis.
