'Sarge' named mascot for annual Freedom Blast

The mascot for the City of Greer Freedom Blast on Saturday, June 28 is the bald eagle. "Sarge" was the top-voted name for the mascot.

 

“Sarge” has won the popular vote as the bald eagle mascot at the City of Greer’s Freedom Blast. The mascot is among several additions to the only Independence Day celebration in the Upstate on Saturday, June 28.

The event is 6-10:15 p.m. The Zack Brown Tribute Band 20 Ride is the headline entertainment. Greer Idol and Idol Teen will hold its first elimination round.

The military tribute will feature upstate artists Sylvia Irby singing “America the Beautiful” and Matthew Phillips performing the national anthem. Dave Gorman, commander of Greer Chapter 39 of the Disabled American Veterans, will address the audience before the Veterans Walk. The official schedule of events / activities are here.

“The voters selected a great name that definitely ties in with Freedom Blast’s overall mission to honor our veterans and the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces,” city communications manager Steve Owens said. “The interest in the online poll and the eagle’s name reflects the continued growing popularity of Freedom Blast.”

“Sarge” captured 31 percent of the 91 votes during the two-week campaign, while “Spirit” finished second with 23 percent.

The mascot will greet guests from 6-8:30 p.m. in the Eagle’s Nest, the second floor lobby at Greer City Hall. A professional photographer will take photos or guests may use their own cameras.

• The rib-eating contest fill have eight adults and four children competing. Visit the guest relations tent beginning at 6 p.m.

• A portable laser tag arena is new.

• Freeze Machine, a frozen confections vendor will be set up in the Kids Zone area.

• Veterans participating in the Veterans Walk gather at the amphitheater stage by 9:30 p.m.

• The DAV trailer and its Mobile Service Office will be staffed from 6-8 p.m.
