Senate confirms Haley as next U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations

Published on Tuesday, January 24, 2017

S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley has a new title tonight: U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.

The Senate overwhelmingly approved the Republican governor's nomination early Tuesday evening with a 96-4 vote.

South Carolina Sens. Tim Scott and Lindsey Graham had glowing praise for Haley after she appeared before the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations before the full Senate vote.

Haley impressed lawmakers from both parties by taking a tough stance toward Russia, praising international alliances such as NATO, and calling out human rights violations in countries such as the Philippines.

The daughter of Indian immigrants will be one of the few women and minorities in Trump's Cabinet.
