South Carolina is the third worst state for working moms, according to Wallet Hub, a financial analyst. Only Nevada (51) and Alabama (50) are worse in the survey that includes the District of Columbia.

Women today comprise nearly half of the American workforce and slightly less than three quarters of them are solo moms with young children. Women earn 79 cents for every dollar that men make and have far less upward mobility, according to Wallet Hub’s report.

Analysts compared state dynamics across 13 metrics to identify the best and worst states for working moms.

Life as a working mom in South Carolina (1=best; 25=average):

49th – Ratio of female executives to male executives

44th  – Day care quality

44th – Percent of single-mom families in poverty

42nd – Access to pediatric services

41st – Female unemployment rate

38th – Median women’s salary (adjusted for cost of living)

35th – Parental leave policy

31st – Gender pay gap (women’s earnings as percent of men’s)
