Agility drills were part of the camp to introduce players to their benefit.
Boys ages 6-13, who play in the Greer Recreation Upstate Jackets Youth Football program, practiced basic skills.
“The purpose of the clinic is to get the kids excited for practice and the season starting in a few weeks,” said David Holtzclaw, of Greer P&R. “Hopefully they will take a few things they learned and practice at home.”
Holtzclaw said the players are split into age groups for drills on footwork, speed and coordination.
Coaches from the Greer Recreation Department offered instruction Monday night. Cones were spread for agility and speed drills, coaches held hand dummies to instruct proper tackling technique and there was playful give and take between players and coaches.
Some players even received a nickname. “It’s all about having fun with the kids, and making them happy so they can have something to tell their mom or dad when they go home,” said Ron Johnson, coaching one station.
“We want to see effort because everything except heart can be taught,” said coach Sonny Carter.
The free clinic continues tonight and next Monday and Tuesday, July 14-15, from 6:30 – 8 p.m. at City Stadium.
