USC Upstate, BMW partner to offer Academic Outreach Camp for high school seniors

Published on Thursday, February 27, 2014

Rising high school seniors in Cherokee, Greenville and Spartanburg counties, with an interest in the real world applications of mathematics and statistics to manufacturing and healthcare processes, are invited to apply to the two-week USC Upstate/BMW Manufacturing Academic Outreach Camp, to be held June 9-13 and June 16-20.

The camp, now in its fourth year, offers a high quality program that lets students from the Upstate learn skills that can be applied throughout their career. The camp will be held at USC Upstate’s George Dean Johnson Jr. College of Business and Economics in downtown Spartanburg from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., but will also involve trips to the BMW Manufacturing facility and BMW Performance Center in Greer, as well as to USC Upstate's main campus.

For students with a demonstrated ability in math and science, this camp will emphasize how mathematics and science are used to improve the processes to build things like BMW vehicles and how other industries and organizations, such as health care, finance and the armed forces, use similar processes and tools. In addition to honing and improving team work and leadership skills, students will gain hands-on experience, from BMW managers and engineers, by learning and applying Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma tools through computerized challenges, physical simulations, process improvement case studies and teaching games.

An in-depth tour of BMW’s manufacturing facility is included and students will get a chance to improve their driving skills behind the wheel of a BMW vehicle at the BMW Performance Center.

More information for applicants is available online at www.uscupstate.edu/bmwcamp or on www.Facebook.com/uscupstatebmwcamp.  Students must submit their application, a letter of recommendation from their high school guidance counselor or teacher, their high school transcripts, and PSAT, SAT or ACT scores, by March 10.

A selection committee will review all applicants. A valid S.C. driver’s license is required. The camp is free; lunch and snacks will be provided.  Direct questions to Donette Stewart at (864) 503-5280, [email protected] or to Tim Ellis at (864) 503-5894, [email protected].
