The Speech Department at Washington Center is working to encourage communication among students who cannot speak.

One way the speech therapists are encouraging peer interaction is with a card game. Four students from different classes gather in the speech office with their individualized communication devices for a game of UNO. The students name colors, request help, cheer each other on and answer questions during the game.

The students have learned to connect symbols to produce phrases and to wait their turn before talking. The students are learning how to communicate and the social rules of communication in a way that does not seem like work. These skills are already carrying over into the classroom and community.
