William “Sonny” Boroughs, a fixture in the community who contributed friendship, aided non-profits with his volunteerism and funding, and dearly loved Blue Ridge High School fan, died Sunday. He was 80.

Boroughs fought a gallant battle with cancer.

Boroughs was widely popular with his Sonny’s BBQ he would make at many non-profit events. He made the barbecue lunch at Big Thursday for 26 consecutive years. Boroughs often shared vegetables from his garden at Big Thursday and other events.

“He’s a legend,” said Cindy Simpler, Greer Community Ministries Executive Director. “Sonny was a strong advocate for us financially and as a volunteer.”

Simpler said, “We absolutely are just devastated with his passing. He is synonymous with Big Thursday.”

Boroughs often offered his Brunswick stew for donations to the American Cancer Society and other non-profits.

Boroughs served in the United States Air Force and was loved his country, saluting during the playing of the National Anthem.
