The methods the City of Greer Police Department uses to help educate young drivers earned their own reward Tuesday when the Alive at 25 program and SIDNE go-kart training tool won the 2012 Municipal Association of South Carolina Achievement Award for Public Safety.
“The MASC Achievement Awards annually highlight the most innovative programs in South Carolina. It’s highly competitive and we’re thrilled that the judges have honored the City of Greer’s program to curtail distracted and impaired driving,” City Administrator Ed Driggers said. Driggers made the announcement tonight at the City Council meeting.
The Citizens Police Academy begins Thursday at 6:30 p.m. Greer Police Department personnel teach a 10-week program designed to give citizens working knowledge of law enforcement.
Topics include patrol procedures (including a ride along), dispatch, detention, community outreach, criminal investigation, gangs, animal control, and K-9 and taser demonstrations. Classes are 6:30-8:30 p.m. on consecutive Thursdays.
The Greer Police arrested Preston Blaine Thompson, 20, of 100 Bennetts Crossing Court, for Impersonating an officer, discharging a firearm and unlawful carrying of a firearm.
There was a confrontation between two motorists on Hwy. 29 on Thursday at approximately 10:30 p.m. One of the motorists stated (Thompson) said he was an undercover cop and that he could have him locked up.
A Lyman man received a 25-year prison sentence today after he accepted responsibility for an alcohol-related crash that claimed the lives of two Greer people and injured a third.
Kevin Casey, 40, pleaded guilty to two counts of felony driving under the influence with a death and felony driving under the influence with great bodily injury. Casey will serve 85 percent of Circuit Judge Mark Hayes’ prison sentence before he is eligible for release.
The Greer Police Department arrested six people Friday night, four with addresses in Greer, and charged them with manufacturing methamphetamine, according to police reports and arrest warrants. Three of those arrested are charged with making meth in an Oakland Place Apartment building where four children resided.
Police, according to the incident report, had received complaints about alleged drug activity at 212 Oakland Avenue. They were conducting surveillance when occupants at that address left and drove off in a silver Ford Explorer that was eventually stopped for a traffic violation.
The Greer Police Department is accepting applications for the spring session of the Citizens Police Academy.
The 10-week program begins Thursday, March 1 at the police department at 102 S. Main Street. Classes are 6:30-8:30 p.m. and designed to give the public working knowledge of the Greer PD. Graduates have also aided the department in public events in support roles.
Greer police investigators have arrested and charged Jessica Rose Coxie, 23, and Christy Leigh McCall, 25, both living at 23 Derby Trail, with arson third degree.
The Greer Police Department and the Greer Fire Department responded to a house fire at 301 Tryon St. on Monday.
Michael Antoninius Weatherspoon has been arrested and charged with murder, attempted armed robbery and conspiracy in the double shooting deaths Monday at 203 Pelham Street.
The shootout resulted in the deaths of Douglas J. Burgess, 62, and Teresa Weatherspoon, 34.
