The rebels and the empire used laser cannons to shoot it out on the big screen in “Star Wars,” but the weapons could soon move to the battlefield with the help of two Clemson University engineers who are receiving a combined $3.2 million from the Department of Defense.
CBL Charitable Foundation has awarded $10,000 higher education scholarships to three local students.
Greer High School seniors Candace Jensen and Victoria Schneider were both winners of the 2107 Robert F. Williams Scholarship, named for a past CBL Board Chairman and member of the South Carolina State Board of Education. Jensen will attend the University of Georgia, while Schneider will attend Clemson University.
Jerry Henson, for more than 50 years has left his mark on the Blue Ridge Athletic Program, the community and has coached and mentored many former athletes and generations of families.
The Blue Ridge community, family and friends and many others Jerry Henson has crossed paths on the athletic field and in the classroom honored their favorite son by naming the baseball field, “Jerry Henson Field”.
Todd C. Kohlhepp, of Spartanburg County, received seven consecutive life prison terms plus an additional 60 years behind bars Friday after he admitted to killing seven people and sexually assaulting a woman that he held captive in a storage container.
Kohlhepp, 46, pleaded guilty to seven counts of murder, four counts of possession of a weapon during a violent crime, two counts of kidnapping and one count of first-degree criminal sexual conduct.
Top-ranked Limestone College won the NCAA Division II lacrosse championship beating No. 4 Merrimack College, 11-9, Sunday at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass.
It is Limestone’s third championship in four years and avenged an earlier defeat to Merrimack. Limestone has won five national championships.
Greer lost a centenarian when Ruth “Granny” Barnett Strange died Friday. She was 100 years old.
There are several Memorial Day commemorations and family holiday events scheduled during Monday.
Greer’s Veterans Park, at 17th Street, will host a memorial event, 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. that includes a wreath placed at the wall of fallen soldiers, the Spartanburg Rifle and Drill Team and the traditional flag ceremony to symbolize those who died in active military service.
Golden Gourmet, of Americus, Ga., is recalling approximately 5,248 pounds of frozen entree products that may be tainted with Listeria monocytogenes, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced Thursday.

John Morrell and Co., a Cincinnati, Ohio establishment, is recalling approximately 210,606 pounds of ready-to-eat hot dog products that may be contaminated with extraneous materials, specifically metal, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced.

Karl David Parkkonen, owner of Aspen Concrete Contractors, died Wednesday. He was 41.
GPD officers arrested Edwin Anthony Thomas, 51, Friday for third-degree assault and battery for an incident that took place at Greer Middle School sometime one week before spring break, according to a police report and arrest warrant. Thomas was a teacher at Greer Middle School at the time of the alleged incident, according to police.
Police were contacted when allegations surfaced. Thomas was placed on administration leave from Greenville County School and has since resigned his position. The district hired Thomas in August 2015.
Mark Anguiano fired a bogey-free 9-under 62 on Thursday at Furman University Golf Club to take a one-stroke opening-round lead over Andrew Yun, Blake Adams and Stephan Jaeger in the Web.com Tour’s BMW Charity Pro-Am presented by SYNNEX Corporation.
Anguaino’s 62 ties the lowest 18-hole score on the Web.com Tour this season, which was previously recorded by Nate Lashley in March at the Chitimacha Louisiana Open.
The Greater Greer Education Foundation awarded $13,000 in scholarships to 13 students from six high schools in the Greater Greer area Tuesday afternoon at Greer City Hall.
Students were selected by the guidance department of each school and submitted to the Foundation. The Foundation in turn will present scholarship funds to the technical school or college on behalf of the student.

Former Greer High School Principal Marion Waters was honored Wednesday night as the school's Commons/Cafeteria was officially named “Marion Waters Commons”.
Waters, who was the principal at Greer High School for 22 years until his retirement last year, was on hand with family and friends.
