Lewis beats Loftis for Greenville County Sheriff

Will Lewis edged Sheriff Steve Loftis in a runoff for Greenville County Sheriff.
Lewis, a former sheriff’s deputy won 50.79 percent of the vote to Loftis’ 49.21 percent. The returns are unofficial and the results will be certified Thursday at noon.
Scott Talley wins runoff for Senate District 12 seat

Scott Talley won the Republican Primary runoff for Senate District 12 defeating incumbent Lee Bright Tuesday night by 299 votes.
Talley earned 52 percent of the votes (4,861) over Bright with 48 percent of the votes (4,562).
Jolly's death creates special election to fill vacancy of Wade Hampton Fire District

Due to the untimely death of John Jolly, Commissioner on the Wade Hampton Fire and Sewer District, a special election will be conducted to fill the vacancy for the remainder of the term, through December 2019.
The special election is scheduled for Aug. 30. This is a non-partisan election.
Bright versus Talley headline choices greater Greer voters have in primary runoffs Tuesday

Several runoffs are scheduled Tuesday in the Republican primaries in Greenville and Spartanburg counties.
The races for Senate District 12 has incumbent Sen. Lee Bright facing former state Rep. Scott Talley. Bright won 38 percent of the votes and Talley 27 percent in the primary. Since then Gov. Nikki Haley and Greer businessman David McCraw and Duncan Mayor Lisa Scott have endorsed Bright. The district includes Greer, Thornblade, Sugar Creek, Five Forks and part of Spartanburg County.

Scott Talley got the biggest endorsement in the state when Gov. Nikki Haley endorsed the candidate for Senate District 12.
Haley came to Duncan to Talley’s rally at the AFL corporate offices Thursday evening. It was a big boost for Talley as his former opponents Duncan Mayor Lisa C. Scott and Greer businessman David McCraw also endorsed the Spartanburg attorney.

Tom Corbin edges John White by 321 votes in Senate District 5 race

State Senator Tom Corbin of Travelers Rest defeated John B. White of Spartanburg by 321 votes Tuesday in the District 5 race. Corbin will keep his seat for a second term since there is no opposition in the general election.
Corbin received 5,435 votes for 52 percent versus White’s 5,114 votes and 48 percent.

A runoff is held when no candidate earns more than 50 percent of the vote.
Mike Barnes unseats Joe Baldwin in County Council District 18 race, this one counts

Mike Barnes beat incumbent Joe Baldwin in the County Council District 18 race Tuesday night in the Republican primary.
Barnes won with more than twice the number of votes – 2,459-1,139 – than Baldwin. Barnes garnered 68 percent of the vote to 32 percent for Baldwin.

The South Carolina Republican Primary will be held Tuesday with some winners not facing Democratic opposition in November. Other races with three or more candidates face the possibility of a runoff in two weeks.
The winner of the Senate District 5 race between incumbent Tom Corbin and John B. White will not have opposition in the Nov. 8 general election.

The primary election for SC Senate District 5 between the incumbent Tom Corbin and challenger John White is a bit of a puzzle to me.
With Greer being the largest city in the district, there was initially a question in my mind how well a representative from Tigerville would serve the interests of our citizens.
