Andy Jones, former football coach and athletics director, dies

Andy Jones, former head football coach at Boiling Springs and Hillcrest high schools in the 1980s, died Friday. He was 70.

Jones coached Boiling Springs High School and was athletics director from 1983-88. He resigned from coaching in 1989 after nearly two decades.

He became a personnel director and assistant superintendent for Cherokee County Schools.

Jones began his coaching career at Carver Junior High School in Spartanburg, where he spent two years. He was defensive coordinator at Union for six years, an assistant coach for one year at Spartanburg High School and was named head football coach at Hillcrest of Simpsonville in 1980. Three years later he was named head coach at Boiling Springs.

Jones, a native of Whitmire, graduated Berea High School and Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tenn.

Funeral arrangements were incomplete Friday.
