A global corporation is helping Greer Middle College Charter High School prepare students to compete and succeed in a global economy.

Terrence Ford, AT&T’s regional director of External Affairs, recently visited campus to present a $3,000 donation from the international communications and entertainment company. Receiving the gift on behalf of GMC were principal Jimmy Armstrong and Sen. Tom Corbin (SC District 5), a previous member of the  GMC fundraising committee.

Armstrong said the funds will help GMC with the cost of providing daily lunch for students who would typically qualify for a free or reduced-price meal at a traditional school. .

"As a charter school, we don't get funding for this program like traditional schools do,” he said. “We cover the cost on our own because we believe strongly that students cannot learn and achieve to their highest potential when they are hungry.”

Opened in 2008, GMC is located on the Benson Campus of Greenville Technical College. Enrollment is open to any student in South Carolina, with no admission test or tuition. Students who qualify take college classes for free, creating the opportunity to earn one or more Associate’s degrees while still in high school.

"We are very fortunate to have an outstanding student-centered charter school like GMC in our area.  We appreciate AT&T's commitment to education and investment in our GMC community," said Corbin.

“At AT&T, we believe all children can succeed and that education is the key to a person’s future,” Ford said. “We appreciate the opportunity to assist the faculty, staff, and volunteers at GMC in making a lasting impact the lives and futures of the students and their families.”
