Mike Barnes, owner of Barnes Towing in Greer, has announced he is running for Greenville County Council District 18.

Greer’s Mike Barnes announced his candidacy for Greenville County Council District 18, which encompasses Greer, parts of Blue Ridge and Taylors.

Barnes is owner of Barnes Towing for 30 years and is a member of the Greenville County Planning Commission. He said cultivating a business-friendly environment to support existing businesses and recruiting new ones is vital to a prosperous community.

He filed during the first week. “We’re ready to show people we’re here,” Barnes said. “We’ve already been knocking on doors and we got our signs today.”

Barnes said he will run on government transparency and making his votes public.  “Citizens can expect openness and transparency and be able to see where every tax dollar is spent and see that wasteful spending is eliminated,” Barnes’ statement said. “I believe in honest and open government.”

“Revitalization efforts will help restore and maintain our older communities and assist us in providing equal opportunities for all citizens,” Barnes said.

Filing for the June 12 primary closed at noon today. Barnes will run against incumbent Joe Baldwin, also from Greer.
