Riverside High School’s Eric Cummings coached his final track and field competition last weekend at the state high school championships at Spring Valley High School. The Riverside girls had their best finish as runnerup last weekend.

Cummings, however, will continue to coach the cross country teams.

He coached track and field 17 years – 11 at Riverside and six years before that at Byrnes High School. He has one year remaining as president of the South Carolina Track Cross Country Coaches Association and will be in charge of next year’s state track and field championships.

Cummings, in an interview with an Internet publication, said he wanted to spend more time with his children, Alex (freshman at Riverside), Lucas (7th grader at D.R. Hill Middle School) and Jon (fourth grader at Lyman Elementary).

Cummings made it clear he was stepping away from track and field but will continue coaching cross country until son, Jon, graduates high school.
