Greenville County deputies were attempting to serve warrants on Charles Eugene Van Norman II for domestic violence and kidnapping.
Greenville County deputies and the Sheriff’s Office SWAT team arrived at the Pine Grove Lane home around 2 p.m. Tuesday. Deputies were attempting to serve warrants on Charles Eugene Van Norman II, 42, for a domestic violence incident on Sheldon Road on Monday, according to the GCSO report.
Van Norman had entered a woman’s residence and threatened to kill her. Van Norman told the woman she could not leave the house and he used a box cutter striking her multiple times. The woman was eventually able to escape through a window and call for help, according to the report.
At approximately 1 p.m., Tuesday deputies from the Sheriff’s Office warrants division were conducting surveillance when they observed Van Norman enter the residence on Pine Grove Lane. Deputies attempted to make contact with Van Norman and demanded he come out using a public address system for several hours, according to the report.
The Sheriff’s Office SWAT team was activated and continued to make contact with no results. SWAT team members administered tear gas inside in hopes Van Norman would exit with no results, according to the report.
At around 5 p.m. deputies made entry and discovered Van Norman inside, with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Van Norman was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the report.
