BMW Manufacturing Co. opened a $5 million, 25,000 square foot Family Health Center on its campus in GreerToday for its employees, retirees and their families.

The onsite family pharmacy was relocated to the new facility and joined by occupational, primary care services, as well as vision, dental and physical therapy. Health coaches are available and Dimensions, a voluntary diabetes patient education program in place since 2008, is on site.

The facility opened today at 1 p.m. The pharmacy has been in operation.

"BMW is not only a product-oriented company, we are also a people-oriented company. We believe that our associates are the most important asset to our success," said Josef Kerscher, President of BMW Manufacturing Co. "Our goal is very clearly we want to offer a facility and healthcare for a reasonable price. The architecture, facility and equipment are contemporary in healthcare."

The Health Center is voluntary.

"We don’t just want to maintain our associates' health and performance. We also want to play an active role in helping them achieve that goal," Frank-Peter Arndt, BMW Group Board Member responsible for Global Production. "With this announcement, BMW affirms its focus on quality innovation both in our products and in our facilities."

Arndt said, “This is a social commitment we are making, one of our twelve basic beliefs. The Family Health Center’s convenience will reduce waiting time and travel with everything under one roof.”

"We want to provide individuals greater opportunity to reach and maintain optimal health through education, prevention, early detection and management of existing health conditions," said Annmarie Higgins, Vice President of Human Resources for BMW Manufacturing.

Vision, dental and physical therapy will be available 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday and Wednesday and 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday to cover all shifts. Dental is expected to accommodate 20 patients a week and vision expects to serve 9-10 patients daily. The pharmacy processes, on average, 90,000 prescriptions annually, according to BMW.

Highly trained professionals and the latest in healthcare technology have been employed, the manufacturer announced. Walgreens Take Care Health Systems will independently manage the Health Center. Walgreens vetted all the doctors, nurses and medical associates, said Peter Hotz, Walgreens Group Vice President.

“Healthcare is not typically characterized by high levels of customer service. At this health center, we want to make sure that BMW associates and their families have a healthcare experience unlike any other," Hotz said. "We want to do a lot more than just treat people when they're sick. We want to help make them aware of their health risks, provide them with coaching and guidance and set them on a path to optimal health and well-being."

Michelin USA, headquartered in Greenville, also has a health center managed by Walgreens. Walgreens and BMW officials said they do not expect to interface the facilities.
